Associate Professor Dr. Supaporn Tantachote, President of the Thai Pediatric Nutrition Association and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Vajira Hospital, Navamindradhiraj University, revealed survey data from SEANUT II on the nutritional status of infants and children aged 6 months to 12 years. The survey identified a “Triple Burden of Malnutrition” among Thai children:

1. Stunting/Overweight/Obesity: About 1 in 16 Thai children, or approximately 6.2%, are stunted. A major issue is overweight and obesity among school-age children, affecting up to 30-32%. This problem arises from inadequate balanced nutrition and excess caloric intake, especially from excessive sugars.

2. Hidden Hunger (Micronutrient Deficiency): Micronutrient deficiencies are significant. The top 5 problem nutrients are vitamin D (94% deficiency), followed by calcium, zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin A (deficiencies at 76%, 72%, 67%, and 54%, respectively).

Deficiencies in these nutrients affect children’s growth and development. Specifically, a lack of iron and zinc increases the risk of anemia and impacts brain development and immune function. Zinc deficiency is often due to insufficient meat consumption, vitamin C deficiency from low fruit and vegetable intake, and vitamin D deficiency due to limited sunlight exposure as children spend less time outdoors.
